Fra Angelico's Annunciation Fresco
This fresco is painted on the wall of the corridor of the convent at San Marco in Florence. Notice how devoutly Mary is greeting the angel Gabriel and he in turn is giving the same reverence to her.
Fra Angelico, whose name before taking vows was Guido di Pietro, lived frfom 1400 until 1455. He was a Florentine painter and a Dominican friar and was considered in his time less of an artist and more of an inspired saint. He was actually a professional artist who was trained as a manuscript illustrator early in life. He was always current with the latest techniques of Florentine art.

This monastery was taken over by Fra Angelico's order in 1436. He painted fifty frescos in the buildings mostly in the friar's cells to inspire devotion. Fra Angelico was known for his perspective in architecture and the black lines in this fresco, connecting the arcs show his linear perspective. He is also well known for the serenity of his work largely due to the immaculateness of his coloring and his economy of drawing. His paintings were graceful and largely influenced the artists of Florence.
Fra Angelico and his assistants decorated the walls o this convent between 1438 and 1450.
