A Candidate for Our Daughters

Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska is now the Republican candidate for Vice-president. This news made the women I know — pro-life, fiscally conservative, desperate to have a good female role model in politics for our daughters — extremely happy and proud. When the announcement came I gathered my older daughters around the small kitchen television set and explained to them that this woman with five children, with a loving husband and strong commitment to her family had a very good chance at becoming our next Vice President.

Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Movie

I was totally thrilled when I was asked to attend a private screening of the new American Girl movie last month. Catholic Exchange was going to publish my review and all I had to do was take Katie and Erin to a private screening in Manhattan and then return a week later to a fancy hotel and interview the cast.

I love working for Catholic Exchange.

It was a terrific experience and meeting the cast was quite the thrill. Abigal Breslin is a lovely young lady, poised, articulate and very polite. The other children in the cast were also great fun to talk to and hearing their perspective on movie making was enlightening.

Chris O'Donnell is better looking in person than on the screen. A nice guy all around who himself has a large (by Hollywood standards) Irish family of five children.  Julia Ormond was beautiful and spoke of her childhood in England which had striking similarities to Kit's in the movie.

A Vocation for Ryan

"Since he was old enough to articulate it, Ryan has wanted to be a priest. He has played Mass in the most reverent way possible since he was six years old. For a long time he had, permanently, set up an altar on my coffee table using pieces from his sister's tea set, a stack of white handkerchiefs from his father's drawer and my crocheted table runner. He would express his great displeasure whenever I walked past my own coffee table and did not genuflect.

I had the holiest coffee table in town"
