Poetry Friday

Poetry Friday is being hosted by Farm School this week...

Pied Beauty
by Gerard Manley Hopkins

Glory be to God for dappled things-
       For skies of couple colour as a brinded cow;
             For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh fire-coal chestnust falls; finches’ wings;
         Landscape plotted and pieced-fold, fallow, and plough;
               And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange;
         Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
                With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;

He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change;
                            Praise Him.

This is Katie's selection for our homeschool poetry reading on February 3rd.

Have a lovely day!

Oh how I love this poem! The first time I heard it I knew my freckles as beautiful. I learned about alliteration from Hopkins. This is my favorite line: "He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change;
Praise Him."

What a wonderful choice, and what a wonderful poem for reading aloud and savoring. Have a terrific time at the poetry reading next month, and I can't wait to read your post about it!
